With Juneteenth and Father's Day being so close this year, I have reflected on my capability to provide for my family, a human right that my ancestors were never allowed because of their physical bondage. Whether it is working with the bees, planting crops, playing soccer with the kids, or looking for insects on the farm my family and I have established a relationship to the land that our ancestors did not have here in America.

Introducing me to horses was not the only thing my dad did. I was able to observe him as an entrepreneur. When he had an idea, he acted on it. That is exactly how I am today. I have no children, but I am a mother. I have never conceived a child, yet still I am a mother. I hadn’t envisioned myself to be on the cusp of 33, single, and managing a farm with livestock and a business on my own. I’ve always wanted to have children of my own, but I now realize that being a mother isn’t limited to humans raising humans.

Connecting with Canadian Field Team Member, Kate Schat, on family and homesteading, by encouraging her children to be regular contributors on the farm, Kate is instilling the family motto in the next generation, "work like dogs, eat like kings."

Whether it was out fishing or hunting, helping in the yard, or moving snow in the skid-steer, Muck boots are all I can remember people wearing for these activities in North Dakota. I always was thrilled to put on my Muck boots because it meant I got to tag along with my dad and grandpa…

Since 1998, Read Across America has celebrated reading by building literacy programs to motivate and encourage kids across the U.S. to read. This year we are highlighting Saddle Up & Read, a non-profit organization led by Muck Field Team member, mom, cowgirl, and horse whisperer, Caitlin Gooch, and her mission to improve kids’ confidence in reading in her home state of North Carolina through live equestrian events that offer kids the opportunity to engage with and read to horses.

Holiday season is my favorite because it’s closer to the new year. During the holidays there’s more down time. More time to connect with family and reflect on all the opportunities, experiences, and blessings throughout the year.

Deer camp has different meanings and purposes depending on who you ask. For some it’s an escape, a reset from the grind of everyday life. For others it’s a challenge both physically and mentally. For me, it’s about the people I’m with.

Growing up in The Midwest I’ve always loved the change of seasons and in particular when winter finally comes and snow starts to fall. My wife and our three labs love the snow and every year we load up and head into the mountains to cut down our Christmas tree in the national forest. Depending on the year and the amount of snow we usually take the truck or the side by side (sxs) but either way it’s an adventure.

Our holiday season is typically filled with amplified love, a ton of traveling, and the best food of the year. Growing up, my family always put a special emphasis on Christmas and Kwanzaa; this remains true today. The holiday season is my favorite because it allows me the time to slow down, kick off my Muck boots and truly embrace the beautiful village that I am so blessed to call my family. As a farmer, this takes a lot of planning long before the holiday season starts - however, it’s all worth it.

For a farmer, the holidays can be more than a meal and time spent with family. For instance, premature newborn goats might be in the living room on thanksgiving because they required around the clock care after being rejected by their mother. Or a delayed arrival to dinner because of an ill goat and the need to finish up on mucking out and bedding down pens for winter kids.
